Games

All games I will play and go into so I can make my own opinion of the representations within the game, most games I have played before so know the representation of females within them, specifically Assassins Creed as I am a big fan of the series. And it was my love for gaming that I conducted my ted talk about it as I had notices the blatant sexism that kept persisting in games, for really no reason at all.

“Why does sexism persist in the video games industry” – By Kim Gittleson

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27824701

This source will be really helpful to my research as its research are done on similar games to those being analysed. (Assassins Creed/Lara Croft) the article also contains relevant statistics like who plays video games and the dominance of male characters in the industry. As this article was published through the BBC its a very reliable source of research. This article helped me see the level of sexism in the games industry, however saying this i question if the article is biased in anyway due to it being written by a female. I aim to find a article written from a males point of view to compare the argument.

“Damsels In Distress: Video Games”

https://www.hastac.org/blogs/ezobel/2014/03/06/damsels-distress-female-representation-video-games

I am uncertain how trust worthy this source is, the article has good referencing points of information however i can’t find out anything about the author. This make this source 1/2 usable as i could use all referencing points, however all views i feel are quite extremely biased and irrelevant. This source is useful as this article covers the physical representation of females in video games and how they are seen in comparison to males. In the way of what they wear and things like facial expression. The article covers the comparison of characters in video games like Scorpion to princess peach. Also goes into female video game characters being over-feminised and over sexualised. This gives examples from Dead Or Alive, a fighting game.  It then goes into game mechanics and how the female characters are purposely worst or weaker than the male characters as they are presented as valiant brave warriors.  This article made me realise that it wasn’t only physical representation in games of female that was being over sexualised but actually game developers making female characters weaker than male ones. Basically how all females in video games to be just the damsel in distress and argue that games with female lead won’t sell.

“Ubisoft in trouble over comments about female character”

http://kotaku.com/ubisoft-in-trouble-over-comments-about-female-character-1589611410

This document is an exploration into the controversy that happen at e3 2014, and Add to dictionary comments towards not including females into their games, these being assassins creed and far cry 4. this document has quotes evidence on what happen and who said it which will make it very important to include when talk over the topic. This article is very trust worth from the source point of view in which I mean all the research conducted on what’s been said is very good however the explanation is really quite biased and exclaims unnecessarily in order t make it seem worse that it actually is. All I will be taking from this article is the basic story at the quotation of people that made comment on the events.

“Essential Facts 2016”

http://essentialfacts.theesa.com/Essential-Facts-2016.pdf

This document shows all the relevant facts and statistics on video games last year this will be extremely help is support my point within my ted talk as I can back them up with really numbers and research. Especially as I’m focusing on females in the video game industry and how they are not included in which I can use statics like the ration of males to female gamers and if this is enough to dictate to game developers to just make content just for one half of the audience while offending the other. This information is very relevant and trustworthy as it a document put together by the ESA . who are the people that put together e3, and most big gaming companies are part of the ESA which mean all statistics received would be trust ad primary sourced.

“Why games with female protagonists don’t sell, and what is says about the industry”

http://www.themarysue.com/why-games-with-female-protagonists-dont-sell-and-what-it-says-about-the-industry/

This source goes into why there isn’t more of female lead driven games as all reviews on the one that exists now are well recognised and reviewed. Goes into the industry thinking if they made a game with a female lead it wouldn’t sell as well, in which the article completely disproves. This source is very relevant and trust worthy but a little biased, this has made me realise I’m going to need to have both sources from  male and female perspective. I can take from the this the statics and information on games, player base and profits to help build my argument. I can also use the parts in which she discusses that the gender of the main character would not affect selling figures. All sources used by the writer seems extremly professional and well used which makes me feel like this article is very trust worth and clearly a lot of time has gone into researching etc so I have no reason not to trust it.

“Overwatch – Diversity”

https://gomakemeasandwich.wordpress.com/2016/07/14/overwatch-delivers-diversity-alongside-racist-stereotypes-still-does-better-than-rest-of-aaa-gaming-long/

This source isn’t overly trustworthy as it not written by an established business, this means this article is written from a very biased point of use =s and honestly some content is quite ridiculas. Some parts of it will be useful as it explains the sexism and diversity in the game Overwatch. I took from this the parts about how all confident females are the thin ones expect from a butch Russian that was basically designed as a man, I will use this as another game company that is designing females in an unnatural way, purely to satisfy the male dominated audience.

“Gender and video games”

JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE RESEARCH IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY – Volume 6, Number 1, Summer 2015 ISSN 2068 – 0317 http://compaso.eu (http://compaso.eu/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Compaso2015-61-Kondrat.pdf)

This source is very trust worthy as its research done by the ISSN. All research in this article is very useful due to how it goes into specifically why we are represented in a certain way, which I can use to link back to how representations are made to satisfy the audience . This goes into both male and female representations in video games, this was useful due to this showing me how males are seen in games which I ignorantly missed.

“The (mis)representation of women in games”

http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/AsherEinhorn/20150813/251201/The_misrepresentation_of_women_in_games.php

This source will be really quite helpful as its written by a gaming website about the representations of woman in games, this will be extremely helpful as it allows me to gain the opinion of this gaming website and what they think about the misrepresentations and see if they can educate people why game companies do it. This site is very usefully as most opinions put forward are very relatable and agreeable making it a good source for when trying to show the sexism in the video game industry.

“GTA V is designed deliberately to degrade woman”

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-life/10355275/Grand-Theft-Auto-V-is-designed-deliberately-to-degrade-women.html

this article refers to and explores the way in which the particular video game, GTA V. is deliberately structured to degrade woman and to have them show them as less than men. This source will co on handy when focusing on particular games in order to find examples I can use to show how females are being represented within the game. The views shown here are quite extreme in some places, in particular when they have nit picked the smallest detail and explored it like the developers had put it in the game intentionally. So some of the article I disagree with however other parts are useable. if I am to use this sourced I would try to use very little of it due to it being the telegraph who  really the most of respected publishers.

“Assassin’s Creed’ Has Reached a New Low for Sexism in Video Games”

https://mic.com/articles/91115/assassin-s-creed-has-reached-a-new-low-for-sexism-in-video-games#.ymdab2IeM

This source is somewhat trust worth as the article is based on a good story and sound ideas however the website its being presented on makes the article gossipy (like reading the sun newspaper) I need to be carful when using this source to make sure I sieve out the good useful information and ignore the information that’s there just to get views. This no doubt lowers the usefulness but still the article s somewhat original as its based on the controversy that happen over assassins creed.

Books

“Sex, Lies, and Video Games”

(Sex Roles– September 2007, Volume 57, Issue 5pp 419–43)

I am uncertain how trust worthy this source is, it has good referencing points of information however i can’t find out anything about the author. This make this source 1/2 usable as i could use all referencing points, however all views i feel are quite extremely biased and somewhat irrelevant. This source is useful as this article covers the physical representation of females in video games and how they are seen in comparison to males. It also goes into video games content and how we need to change the ideologies being published in games, it also goes into how females are purely in games for background decoration which I could defiantly use when developing my Talk.

“Video Game Characters and the Socialization of Gender Roles”

http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-007-9278-1

(Sex Roles– December 2007, Volume 57, Issue 11pp 851–864)

Again a very trust worthy source. this goes into the statistical background of video games and the % of woman to male dominance in video games,. Using content analysis, this research examines the portrayal of women and the use of violent themes in a sample of 33 popular Nintendo and Sega Genesis videogames. It is proposed that video games, like other media forms, impact the identity of children. This analysis reveals that traditional gender roles and violence are central to many games in the sample. There were no female characters in 41% of the games with characters. In 28% of these, women were portrayed as sex objects. Nearly 80% of the games included aggression or violence as part of the strategy or object. All information I can use to support my argument of sexism to satisfy the male dominated audience
